Originally to have been named ‘Gigantic’ the third ship of the ‘Olympic’ class ships was renamed ‘Britannic’ after the disaster of the ‘Titanic’. Her completion was much delayed by the enormous amount of conversion work carried out on her whilst under construction due to the lessons learnt after the disaster. This delay meant that her completion coincided with the run up to the First World War whereupon she was stripped of her fittings as a liner and finished as a hospital ship.

She served mainly in the Mediterranean Theatre ferrying wounded back home from the Gallipoli Campaign. It was during one of these voyages, mercifully with very few wounded aboard, that she struck a mine and was lost.

Even more ill-fated than her sister she never carried a single fare-paying passenger in her all to brief career!

This beautifully rendered night scene shows ‘Britannic’ , ablaze with light as required of a hospital ship during wartime, forging through the calm seas of the Agean, not far from where she foundered.
